While the details are still sketchy, it has just been reported that the Eagles have signed former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick to a two year deal. The terms have not been released.
While Andy Reid had earlier stated that the Eagles had no interest in Vick who had recently been reinstated back into the NFL after spending almost two years in jail on dog fighting charges, things must have changed over the past few days.
Former Indianapolis head coach, Tony Dungy had been championing Vick's cause in an effect to help him get back into the NFL. It remains to be seen whether his influence had anything to do with the Eagles' decision to take a chance on the talented, but controversial player.
Under the conditions of his conditional reinstatement, Vick will be able to practice with the Eagles and play in the last two pre-season games. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell will make a decision on a full reinstatement before week six of the regular season.
Actually, this is a complete surprise. I never thought that the Eagles would go down the road of signing a controversial player again after T.O. In fact, I was waiting for Dallas to announce that they were signing Vick. Should make for an interesting year - first we have to wait for all the hype to die down.
ReplyDeleteAfter you get over the shock you start to realize if this guy has straightened out his act and can get anywhere near the athletic form he was a few years ago, this move makes the Eagles extremely hard to defend in light of all the weapons they now have.
