We have now had a chance to see the new-look Eagles on three separate occasions and the preseason so far can be summed up as a famous Clint Eastwood movie 'The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.
The good was definitely the Birds first outing against Baltimore. Michael Vick only played one series in that game, but looked extremely sharp. He completed 4-of-6 attempts for 74 yards including a three-yard touchdown pass to tight end Brett Celek.
The bad was the Eagles' offensive line's performance against Cleveland the other night. Vick was sacked twice and took far too many hits as there were multiple breakdowns across the entire front five. With a few new faces in the lineup, this unit is still getting use to playing with one another, but if they continue to allow Vick to take a beating like he did against the Browns, Vince Young or Mike Kafka will be your starter.
The ugly was the Eagles' entire performance against Pittsburgh. They looked completely flat from the start and buried themselves with penalties, turnovers, and bad mistakes. This game could actually end up being a huge benefit as it pointed out some areas that still need work and more importantly that all the talent in the world is worthless if these guys cannot learn to play as a team.
Philly wraps up the preseason this Thursday night against the New York Jets. The majority of the starters will probably not even play in this game as they prepare for the regular season opener against St. Louis. The game will provide one last opportunity for a few players to make their case for remaining on the team's final 46-man roster, so the movie theme for this game could be 'Staying Alive'.
